Tehran-based start-up Biggco approached me with the idea of creating a User Interface for display tablets intended for taxi passengers. Biggco’s mission is to become the most intelligent tourist guide product. Their original goal was to create a constant stream display of advertisements targeted towards visitors of Tehran. Since a large portion of their budget was going towards purchasing the tablets themselves, they needed a slim design and development plan for the rest of their project. To create the most effective product possible for them, I decided to survey the demographics of tourists visiting Tehran.
Through this research, I discovered that most of Tehran’s tourists are nationals from other cities. The percentage of foreign tourists to Tehran was entirely divided among various nationalities. This is why I suggested that for their initial MVP, we keep the language capabilities of their interface to Farsi and add English and other languages after they have a proven working product. A study in South Africa based on the overall sentiment analysis of people being displayed in-transit advertisements found that overall, people enjoy the experience and have positive attitudes towards such products. Considering that Tehran is a massive city with over 14 million people commuting in it during the daytime, I discovered that my client wanted to create a more interactive experience for the passengers, still representative of their main mission. Since people enjoy seeing relevant advertisements and would most likely be spending much time sitting in the taxis, Biggco wanted to create an exploratory directory of local events and businesses in town. They also wanted to create an integrated app that could be downloaded and used as a smart guide for visitors.

There were two personas I had to design for Biggco. One persona was Ava, a tech-savvy passenger who knows how to navigate most interfaces easily, and the other was Moe, who needs to be more technically savvy. This was the best approach for this project because the real nuances of the demographics coming and going are so varied that these two general umbrella personas would serve the most benefit. There needed to be easy navigation tools, easy-to-understand icons, and effective indicators. The interaction must be meaningful to the passengers rather than simply entertaining. This product needed to act as an initial portal for visitors to the city and still have a strong enough sense of value for them that they would download the mobile version.
Design:
I first started with the brand identity and logo design. The client wanted corporate and bright colors and a logo that resonated with their mission. To create a logo that would fit Biggco’s mission to become the most intelligent tourist guide product, I combined the image of an owl, symbolizing wit, and a location pin. Then came the different functionalities of the pro
duct.
There were a total of five main functionalities which I had to design for Biggco. One is a settings page, which will eventually have options to change interface languages. On the personal mobile version of the product, the settings also allow users to save locations and events around town. The next part of the application is an event-finding calendar that gives users information on all upcoming local events and allows them to purchase tickets directly.
Then I designed the main map with color-coded location pins indicating differences between various types of businesses and events. It will give you live information about the traffic conditions heading toward your destination and show you the most popular companies in the area. New restaurants and businesses can also be featured each day, creating an exploratory approach to how the user experiences the map and the city. Next, there is a directory to search for and explore all local businesses. Finally, there’s a section for news articles and videos, including weather updates. In this section, users can explore different stories from around the world and see weekly climate reports for various cities.
The tablets are also designed to give free wifi to passengers as long as they either download Biggco’s app through a QR code or search or by logging in using their account, which will have been set up through the mobile app version. I wanted the user interface and experience I was creating to be something that would give visitors a closer and more intimate look into what’s happening in Tehran.
I kept the overall design and animations of Biggco simple so that personas like Moe don’t feel confused about what each button does.
Then the constantly changing featured map location pins, in addition to the modern designs chosen, are what persona’s like Ava are looking for. This application design satisfies the desires of the intended personas and stays true to the client’s overall wishes.
